Celebrating 25 Years of Guard Closet: A Journey of Dedication and Innovation

25th Anniversary Text

In 2025, Guard Closet proudly marks its 25th Anniversary, celebrating a remarkable journey that began in 2000. Over the past quarter-century, Guard Closet has grown from a visionary idea into a trusted partner for the marching arts community. As we honor this milestone, we reflect on the incredible people, stories, and innovations that have shaped our legacy.

From Humble Beginnings to Industry Leader (Click Here to Watch the Full Video)

The story of Guard Closet began with a simple yet transformative idea. Founder Brian Prato was working with the Carlisle High School Marching Band in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, a program renowned for its strong color guard and robust inventory of costumes & other equipment. Faced with an overwhelming collection of unused flags, costumes, and props, Brian saw an opportunity: rather than let these items go to waste, why not sell them to other groups in need?

This vision took root in a one-car garage, where Guard Closet began as a small consignment operation. Over time, it expanded steadily, moving through various locations to accommodate its growing inventory and reach. From shared spaces like the Blue Dog Pet Store and American Speedy Printing to our expansive warehouse in Carlisle, each step marked a significant milestone in the company’s evolution.

Today, Guard Closet operates a 3,000-square-foot warehouse in Carlisle, alongside additional storage facilities in Texas, allowing us to serve the needs of groups nationwide efficiently.

The People Behind the Success

One of the constants in Guard Closet’s story is the dedication of its team. Christine Ream, who joined Guard Closet in its early years, has been instrumental in the company’s growth and success. As the Consignment Manager, Christine has built lasting relationships with groups, helping them find affordable solutions and guiding them through the consignment process. Her expertise and passion continue to be the heartbeat of our operations.

In 2020, Guard Closet entered a new era under the ownership of Jeremy Williams and his husband Chris. Jeremy brought with him a wealth of experience, having been a member of the Field of View World Class Color Guard, a graduate of West Chester University, and a creative force in large-scale events and parades. Together, Jeremy and Chris envisioned a future where Guard Closet would be more than a consignment service—it would be a comprehensive resource for the marching arts community.

A Legacy of Growth and Innovation

Over the years, Guard Closet has transformed from a small consignment operation into a comprehensive resource for the marching arts community. While the foundation of our business remains rooted in providing high-quality consignment items, we have expanded to offer a wide range of services that empower performers and educators alike. From custom costume design and formal wear to show design, choreography, and drill writing, our offerings now cater to every aspect of a group’s performance needs. We’ve also introduced educational programming to inspire and equip the next generation of performers. We've even created the On A Water Break Podcast, bringing information and news to marching arts enthusiasts.  These innovations reflect our unwavering commitment to ensuring that all groups, regardless of budget, have access to the tools they need to succeed and shine on the field or floor.

Celebrating Our Legacy and Looking Ahead

The past 25 years have been an extraordinary journey filled with growth, challenges, and countless success stories from the groups we’ve had the privilege to serve. From small local ensembles to world-class color guards, Guard Closet has been honored to support performers as they bring their creative visions to life.

Looking to the future, Guard Closet remains dedicated to its mission of accessibility and excellence. Our team is continually seeking new ways to serve the community, whether through innovative product offerings or expanded services that address the evolving needs of performers and educators. We are excited for what lies ahead and can’t wait to partner with even more groups as they embark on their journeys.
